Chip-on-Board or "COB" is the latest and most advanced LED technology on the market today.....and Silicon Lightworks exclusively uses this cutting-edge LED technology in its full line of trade show exhibit lights. Simply put, our COB LEDs are brighter, consume less power, and output a higher quality beam of light compared to older LED technologies, such as "SMD" or "DIP" LEDs (see chart below for a comparison of current LED technology). Please note most LED trade show lights sold today contain older, less efficient LED technology.

Why Chip-on-Board?

Because all of our lights are designed to run on battery power, it was essential for us to use the brightest, most efficient LED technology available. Furthermore, we were unwilling to sacrifice brightness or light quality in order to achieve acceptable runtimes. In other words, while a 6 watt "SMD" or "DIP" LED light will run for the same 14-15 hours using our Mobile Power Center, neither of these options produce an acceptable level of brightness or quality of light. As such, "COB" LED technology was the only real choice for us and is used exclusively in our entire line of trade show exhibit lights.


What is Chip-on-Board?

Chip-on-Board or "COB" refers to the mounting of a bare LED chip in direct contact with a substrate (such as silicon carbide or sapphire) to produce LED arrays. COB LEDs have a number of advantages over older LED technologies, such as "SMD" or "DIP" LEDs. Most notably, COB technology allows for a much higher packing density of the LED array, or what light engineers refer to as improved "lumen density". In fact, most COB LEDs contain 9 or more diodes, as compared to only 3 diodes for most SMD LEDs and only 1 diode for DIP LEDs. This results in higher intensity and greater uniformity of light, while reducing the footprint of the LED array. The other big difference between COB and other LED technology lies in the fact that COB devices have only 1 circuit and 2 contacts for the entire chip regardless of the number of diodes. This single circuit design, regardless of the number of diodes on the chip, leads to simplicity for the rest of LED device.
